Take your interest and engagement to a new level by earning a continuing education Northern Naturalist Certificate. You can increase your knowledge for personal enjoyment, volunteer work, or employment, all while exploring the natural environment through classroom and hands-on field experience.

Requirements for the certificate: 
  • A minimum of 8 Naturalist courses
  • A minimum of 65 classroom/field-trip hours
  • Of the 65 required hours, at least 10 hours should involve field experience
    (classes that include field trips, hikes, etc.)
  • At least one class from each of the five general categories
    • Environmental Studies Course (required) — 8 hours
    • Water (shoreline or water ecology) — 10 hours
    • Plants, wildflowers, trees — 8 hours
    • Animals, birds, or bugs — 8 hours
    • Geology — 8 hours

Please read:  The Northern Naturalist Certificate Program is designed to be completed in about a two-year time span, but the pacing of the program is up to you. There is no time limit and it is possible to be finished sooner or later. Registration and payment are required for each class in the program. Look for the leaf logo on qualifying classes.
