College for Kids staff is looking forward to providing a fun, educational, memorable, and safe summer experience. Everyone has a responsibility to act in a way that assures a positive experience for all. All are required to follow these guidelines.

Code of Conduct

Behavior Guidelines

  • Be responsible for their words and actions.
  • Be respectful of others.
  • Follow directions from staff members.

Prohibited Behaviors

  • Endangering the health and safety of themselves, others, and/or staff or volunteers.
  • Stealing, damaging, or failing to care for College or personal property.
  • Continual disruption of the program.
  • Refusal to follow the behavior guidelines.
  • Inappropriate physical contact such as hitting, tripping, pushing, or biting.
  • Using profanity or inappropriate language or displaying pornography or clothing or other personal items with offensive content.
  • Bullying or acts of aggression or violence.
  • Possession or use of illegal substances, tobacco, or alcohol.
  • Possession of weapons – any object that may cause harm to another or place another person in fear of his/her safety may be considered a weapon.

Steps Taken for Failure to Follow These Behavior Guidelines

  • College for Kids staff will redirect the camper to a more appropriate behavior in line with the behavior guidelines.
  • If the behavior persists, staff will discuss the problem with a parent/guardian.
  • If the problem persists, the camper may be suspended or dismissed from camp and the parent/guardian will be notified to pick the child up.
  • Physical or verbal abuse to others will not be tolerated or if a camper's behavior at any time threatens the immediate safety of him/her, other campers, or staff, the parent/guardian will be notified and expected to pick-up the child immediately.

Failure to comply with the Code of Conduct may result in the removal from the program and/or additional fees. There will be no refunds given for campers who are removed from the program due to violations of the Code of Conduct. I have reviewed the code of conduct with my child, who agrees to follow these guidelines.

Electronic Devices

Cell phones, electronic games, and all other electronic devices are not permitted to be used during class time. College for Kids will not be responsible for damage or loss of these items. Some classes may utilize electronic devices during instruction; however, College for Kids will not be responsible for damage or loss of these items.

Medication Policy

If at all possible, medication should be administered at home. Medications will be allowed at College for Kids only when failure to take such medicine would jeopardize the health of a child and he/she would not be able to attend the College for Kids if the medicine were not made available.

  • The parent(s)/legal guardian(s) of College for Kids participants are required to disclose their intention to bring medications to the Program, especially to treat potentially life-threatening conditions (i.e. inhalers, EPI-pens, insulin injections). Upon arrival, parent(s)/legal guardian(s) should plan to meet with a member of the College for Kids staff at registration to review medication issues for a College for Kids participant and complete additional required paperwork if not completed prior to arrival. For identification purposes, a current picture of the child is to be provided upon registration.
  • All medications (prescription and over-the-counter) must be stored in the original product packaging and clearly labeled with the participant’s name. Prescription medication(s) must also include a label with the medication’s name and dosage instructions, as well as the prescribing physician’s name and telephone number.
  • All medications will be kept in a securely locked cabinet used exclusively for storage of medications. Medications that require refrigeration will be stored and locked in a refrigerator designated for medications ONLY. Access to all medications will be limited to approved personnel. The need for emergency medication may require that a College for Kids participant carry the medication on his/her person or that it be easily accessed (i.e., inhalers, EPI-pens, insulin injections). College for Kids staff will NOT purchase medications of any type (prescription or over-the-counter) for College for Kids participants of any age.
  • College for Kids has no professional medical staff on-site. College for Kids staff may monitor the self-administration of medications, if necessary, ONLY upon written consent of the parent(s) and/or legal guardian(s) and/or physician orders.
  • It is NOT permissible for a participant to share any medications with any other participants.
  • It is the responsibility of the parent(s)/legal guardian(s) to be sure that the participant’s medications brought to College for Kids are not left behind at the end of the program. Failure to do so will result in the medications being destroyed within three working days after the participant’s last day of class. Absolutely no medications will be returned via mail regardless of circumstance.

Photo/Video Policy

By enrolling in a noncredit course, you grant permission to NMC, its agents and staff to use video and photographs of yourself or the minor you are representing for NMC promotional/advertising materials, including social media, without charge. No consideration is involved for their use. If you do not want NMC to use video and photographs of yourself, inform the Director of Extended Educational Services.

Classes dropped with 0–3 days notice are not eligible for refund or partial credit. Please DO notify our office if your child is unable to attend, as a courtesy to the instructor. In some cases, you may be able to substitute another child in the class. For authorization to do this, call (231) 995-1700 and provide all relevant information.

Child Protection Policy

All College for Kids instructors will fill out an Authorization for Criminal Records Form. NMC Employees are exempt as they have already undergone a background check upon hire.

College for Kids instructors will not be 1:1 with students. If a student is dropped off early, or is the last to be picked up, the instructor will wait with the student in the hallway.

College for Kids instructors cannot assist with students in the bathroom.

College for Kids classrooms will have their doors remain open if the classrooms are not equipped with windows into the hallway.

When parents or caregivers are present in the classroom to assist, they will sign in as an official visitor in the College for Kids office, and wear a visitor name tag.

Special note about open campus: Northwestern Michigan College is an open community campus, and buildings have multiple programs and are undergoing business operations throughout the day and concurrent with College for Kids. While we will make every effort to document all instructors, assistants, and visitors, we will not know all the people that are in a building during your children’s classes. NMC is constantly undergoing renovations and building improvements during the summer months and all contracted work is managed by NMC Campus Safety & Security.

Inclement Weather Cancellations

The majority of College for Kids classes will have a weather plan in place and would not be canceled due to unfavorable weather. In a few classes, though, heavy rain or thunderstorms would result in a class being canceled or possibly rescheduled. In these events, NMC-EES staff or the instructor will email and/or call the affected students. Refer to the refund policy for more details on when NMC cancels a class.
