Learners will develop their foundational understanding of Motivational Interviewing (M.I.), from its origins as a behavioral health approach to addiction treatment, to its present-day usage in an ever-widening array of fields; to effectively talk to people about changing in a way that harnesses the person’s own internal motivation to change. This approach is utilized by coaches, therapists, healthcare workers, leaders, activists, teachers, and a variety of other change-promoting roles.
After completing the 8-hour course, learners understand the flow of M.I., from learning to build strong initial engagement, all the way to helping someone plan for how they will implement their desired change. Learners will be equipped to use M.I.’s Person-Centered Skills, providing them with invaluable communication tools. All learners will have multiple opportunities to practice their M.I. skills, within the safety of our learning space. Additionally they will understand the fundamental strategy of M.I., using intentional responses to accelerate the individual’s own statements about, and movement towards, change.
